Chapter 1-3 Flashcards
Human regions
An area defined by people-based features.
Functional regions
An area defined by how it’s used.
Physical regions
An area defined by physical features.
Lines of Longitude
The invisible lines that run vertically around the earth used to find people or places.
Ex: prime meridean
Lines of latitude
The invisible lines that run horizontally around the earth that are used to find people or places.
Ex: equator
Relative location
The location of a place or region in relation to other places or regions.
Absolute location
The precise position of any point on the earth.
Equator
The most famous line of latitude, seperating the north and south hemisphere.
Prime meridean
The most famous line of longitude that seperates the west and south hemispheres.
Site
The original starting point of a place.
Drainage area (basin)
The area drained by a river system
See page 38-40 in textbook if confused
Drainage divide
The line of high ground that seperates water flowing in one direction or the other.
See page 38-40 in textbook if confused
Boundaries
The limits that are put on regions that define size and shapes.
See page 38-40 in textbook if confused
Barrier
Something that makes it difficult to move.
Fault zone
An area of weakness in earth’s crust, often along plate boundries.
Migration
The movement of people from one place to another.
Plates
The large divisions of earth’s crust that floats or moves on the molten layer of material below it.
Pull factor
A force draws you to a place.
Ex: more modern conditions, better living conditions
Push factor
A force that encourages you to leave a place.
Ex: poor housing
Refugee
A person who flees from their country because factors such as war and drought or natural disasters make it dangerous or impossible to stay.
climate region
an area defined by having similar climate conditions.
criteria
a feature that is considered in defining a region
drainage divide
the line of high ground that seperates water flowing in one direction from another
ecozone
an area created by combining natural features and human activities
human characteristics
the ways to define a region by features that are people-based.
ex: population density, language, religion, culture)
functional characteristics
the ways to define a region by the ways it is used.
ex: farming, industry
natural force
an influence that promotes physical regions
ex: heat, slope, precipitation, wind
physical characteristics
natural conditions of an area or region
ex: plains, mountains , shield
rural region
an area of low population density where people live mainly on fams or in the countyside
soil region
an area with similar soils
time zone
one of 24 regions habing a one- hour difference in time from the next zone
urban and regional planning
the are of study that considers future needs and growth, and plans how to organize our spaces effectively
urban region
an area of high-density population; a city or a town
user-defined region
an area determined by a special service or product
vegetation region
an area that shares the same major vegetation types
wilderness region
an area with no human population
barrier
something that makes it difficult to move
fault zone
an area of weakness in earth’s crust, often found along the plate boundaries
pattern
a distinctive arrangement or distrubution
why do people move?
push and pull factors
transportaion methods: name the main ones (5)
1- boat 2- car 3- train 4- plane 5- bike 6- bus
hemispheres
the north, west, south, and east divisions of Earth.
what are the disadvantages and advantages of a boat ( name 3-5 of any one)
Ad:cheap for long distances, no traffic, can go on water, carries alot
Dis: limited to water (not door to door), water pollution, slow, weather dependant, canals are expensive
disadvantages and advantages of a car ( name 3 -5 of any one)
ad: quick+efficient (door to door) , short+long range travel, thourough network of roads exist, holds medium amount of cargo, holds many people, variety
dis: doesn’t hold THAT much, expensive buy and run, pollution, traffic, needs roads (which takes up space+ destroys environment) requires skill+qualification
disadvantages and advantages of a bike (name 3-5 of any one)
ad: no pollution, excercise, can travel on most terrain, cheaper to buy and run, convenient (door to door)
dis: slow, cannot carry many ppl and cargo, no long range travel, requires physical work, requires skill
