• AAC
o ASHA Definition
• Refers to an area of research, clinical, and educational practice.
• Involves attempts to study and when necessary compensate for temporary or permanent impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions of individuals with severe disorders of speech-language production and/or comprehension
• Includes spoken and written modes of communication
• Rehabilitation
o Refers to intervention strategies and technologies that help someone who has an acquired disability regain a capability
o e.g. TBI, stroke, etc…
• Habilitation
o Refers to intervention strategies and technologies that assist a person, such as someone with a developmental disability, to develop a capability for the first time
• Population Who Uses AAC
o No (stereo) typical person relies on AAC
o All age groups, socioeconomic groups, and backgrounds
o Require adaptive assistance for speaking and/or writing because their gestural, spoken, and/or written communication is temporarily or permanently inadequate to meet all of their communication needs
o Some may be able to produce a limited amount of speech that is inadequate to meet their varied communication needs.
• Purposes of Communication Interactions
o Enable individuals to efficiently and effectively engage in a variety of interactions and participate in activities of their choice
• Express wants/needs
• Transfer information
• Social closeness
• Social etiquette
• Communicate with oneself/internal dialogue
• Linguistic Competence
o Refers to the receptive and expressive language skills of one’s native language
• Operational Competence
o Refers to the technical skills needed to operate the AAC system accurately and efficiently
• Social Competence
o Refers to skills of social interaction such as initiating, maintaining, developing, and terminating communication interactions
• Strategic Competence
o Involves the compensatory strategies used by people who rely on AAC to deal with functional limitations associated with AAC
