Chapter 1 Flashcards
What is LAN?
Local Area Network
What is WAN?
Wide Area Network
A group of computers and network communication devices within a limited geographic area. Third party is not involved.
LAN
not restricted to a particular geographic area and may be interconnected around the world. Third party is involved.
WAN
a single cable connects each work station in a linear chain
bus topology
unidirectional links connect the transmit side of one device to the receive side of another device
ring topology
each station is connected to a central hub or concentrator that functions as a multiport repeater.
star topology
a single data packet is sent form a source to a sing destination on the network.
unicast transmission
a single data packet is copied and sent to specific destinations on the network
multicast transmission
a single data packet is copied and sent to specific destinations on the network.
broadcast transmission

presentation layer
what the part of the OSI model that is responsible for dialog control and synchronization?
session layer
what the part of the OSI model that is responsible for the delivery of a message from one process to another?
transport layer
what the part of the OSI model that is responsible for the delivery of individual packets from the source host to the destination host?
network layer
what layers is LLC (Logical Link Control) between?
Data link and network
identify the network layer protocols and encapsulating
