Purpose of Government
a. maintain social order

There are two forms of Autocracies
- Monarchies (2 types: Absolute and Constitutional)
- Dictatorship (2 types: Totalitarian and Authoritarian)
God gave kings the right to rule over the people and the people were here to serve the kings
Divine Right of Kings Power is passed from father to son, there are no limits to power
Examples of constitutional monarchy
Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Brunei
Constitutional monarchy
where monarchs power is limited by a written constitution and they share power with elected officials

What is the level of citizen participation in Dictatorships
Only citizen participation is from party officials
2 types of Dictatorships?
1) Totalitarian, has no limits to its authority
2) Authoritarian
Characteristics of a Totalitarian Dictatorship
a. extreme idealism
b. intolerance
c. scapegoating
d. **propaganda; Designed to glorify the leader, and the regime to create a cult of personality
Authoritarianism differs from totalitarianism
social and economic institutions exist that are not under the order of the government
Democracy
the consent of the governed
2 forms of democracy?
- Direct
- Representative
2 types of Representative Democracy?
1) Parliamentary
2) Presidential
1st major pillar of direct democracy
1) initiative- is a means by which a petition signed by a certain minimum number of registered voters can force a public vote
2nd major pillar of direct democracy
2) referendum- or a vote on a ballot question, it is a direct vote in which an entire electorate is asked to either accept or reject a particular proposal
3rd major pillar of direct democracy
recall election- is a procedure by which voters can remove an elected official from office through a direct vote before his or her term has ended

a) consent of the governed
b) freedom to criticize and oppose
c) rule by law
d) guaranteed rights and liberties
Government controlled by religious leaders
theocracy
