Chapter-1 Flashcards
Rocks and minerals and their exploitation
How is an igneous rock formed?
When molten rock from the crust and upper mantle cools,
igneous rocks are formed.
How is a sedimentary rock formed?
Sedimentary rocks form when rock undergoes erosion or weathering, and particles are deposited in water bodies like seas or riverbeds. These sediments settle in layers and, over time, become compacted under pressure, forming sedimentary rock.
What is a rock?
Rock is a combination of one or more minerals.
What are minerals?
Minerals are a naturally occurring inorganic substance with a specific chemical composition
What is an igneous rock?
An igneous rock is a rock made during a volcanic process.
What is magma?
Magma is the molten rock below the surface of the Earth.
What is a solution?
A solution is formed when a solid is dissolved in a liquid.
What are precipitates?
Precipitates are when a substance comes out of solution
What is an ion?
Ion is an atom in which the number of positively charged protons is not equal to the number of negatively charged electrons.
What is a sedimentary rock?
Sedimentary rock is a rock formed from material derived from the weathering of other rocks or the accumulation of dead plants and animals.
How are metamorphic rocks formed?
Metamorphic rocks form when heat (above 150°C), pressure (above 1.5 × 10⁸ Pa or 1480 atm), or both cause changes in the rock crystals without melting them, resulting in chemical or physical structural changes.
What is a metamorphic rock?
A metamorphic rock is a rock formed from existing rocks by a
combination of heat and pressure.
What is the rock cycle?
The rock cycle is a representation of the changes between the three rock types and the processes causing them.
What is an ore?
An is a rock with enough of an important element to make it
worth mining.
What is prospecting?
Prospecting is the process of searching for minerals.
What is remote sensing?
Remote sensing is the process in which information is gathered
about the Earth’s surface from above.
What is geochemical?
Geochemical is the chemical properties of rocks.
What are the methods of extraction?
There are two main types of mining. Surface mining
includes open-cast, open-pit, open-cut and strip mining.
Sub-surface mining includes deep and shaft mining.
What is overburden?
Overburden is the rock and soil overlying an economically
viable mineral deposit.
What is geophysical?
Geophysical is the physical properties of rocks.
What is surface mining?
Surface mining is a type of mining used when the mineral
is either exposed on the surface or overlain by only small amounts of overburden.
What is open-pit mining?
Open-pit mining is a type of surface mining.
What is strip-mining?
Strip-mining is a type of surface mining.
What is sub-surface mining?
Sub-surface mining is a type of mining used when the deposit
is covered by a deep layer(s) of unwanted rock.
