Chapter 1 Flashcards
Why and how to use stats?
- We can’t get data on everyone
- Randomly pick people to create a representative sample
- make inferences from the sample to the population
What is the population?
collection of objects/people of interest
What is a sample?
a subset of the population
What is a census?
the sample being the entire population
What is a measurement?
number or attribute from each individual member of the population or sample (Doesn’t have to be numerical. Can be categorical or qualitative rather than numerical and quantitative e.g. colour)
What is sample data?
measurements of a sample collected together
What is a parameter?
number that summarizes some aspect of the population as a whole e.g. population mean
What is a statistic?
number created from the sample data
What is descriptive statistics?
describing, organizing and displaying data
What is inferential statistics?
drawing conclusions about the population of interest from info gathered from a sample
What is Statistics?
methods for collecting, displaying, analysing and drawing conclusions from data
What is quaLitative data?
measurements with no numerical scale, but consisting of attributes, labels or categorical
What is quaNtitative data?
numerical measurements that arise from a numerical scale
What is the statement an example of? “whether someone is taller than 6ft or not”
QuaLitative data as it is categorical, not numerical
What is the symbol of “sample mean”?
