Chapter 1 Flashcards
What is the difference between a host and an end system?
Same thing: represent all devices that are hooked up to the internet
Name some end systems
desktops, linux workstations, servers, smart watches, cars, etc.
Is a web server an end system?
yes
Why are standards important for protocols?
without them none of the protocols would be able to communicate with each other
What are some of the physical media that Ethernet can run over?
Twisted pair copper wire, Coaxial cables, fiber optic cables
What advantage does a circuit switched network have over a packet switched network?
circuit switched network is much more consistent for real time services such as phone calls
What advantages does TDM have over FDM in a circuit-switched network?
in TDM, each circuit gets all bandwidth periodically during brief intervals
What motivates content providers to create large networks such as Google?
reduce payments to upper tier ISPs as well as have greater control of how its services are ultimately delivered to end users
What are the five layers in the internet protocol stack?
Application, Transport, Network, Link, Physical
What does the application layer do?
network applications and application layer protocols reside
What does the transport layer do?
Transports application-layer messages between application endpoints
What does the network layer do?
moving network layer packets known as datagrams from one host to another
What does the Link layer do?
routes a datagram through a series of routers between the source and destination
What does the physical layer do?
move the individual bits within the frame from one node to the next
What is self-replicating malware?
malware that infects a host then attempts to attempt to infect other hosts from that host
