Chapter 1 Flashcards
Individual
the object described in a set of data
Categorical variable
assigns labels that place each individual into a particular category
Quantitative variable
counts or measurements
Two-way table
Table of counts that summarizes data on the relationship between two categorical variables
Marginal relative frequency
gives the percent or proportion for only one of the variables in a two way table
Joint relative frequency
gives the percent or proportion for both the variables
Conditional relative frequency
gives the percent or proportion for one variable among another variable
Mosaic plot
segmented bar graph where width of bars is proportional to group size
Segmented bar graph
categories stacked on top of each other
Mean
Sum of all values (sigma Σ) divided by number of values
x̅ for samples (statistic)
μ for populations (parameter)
Range
Distance between highest and lowest (single number)
Standard deviation
Typical distance of values from mean
Interquartile Range (IQR)
Q1 - Median of the values to the left of the median
Q3 - the median of the values to the right of the median
IQR - the distance between Q1 and Q3
Outliers
Low < Q1 - 1.5 x IQR
High > Q3 + 1.5 x IQR
