Chapter 1 Flashcards
Chemistry
the scientific study of the compostion, structure, and properties of matter and changes that matter ungoes
Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space
Mass
vs.
Weight
Mass: A measure of the amount of matter in an object
Weight: A measure of gravitational force exerted on an object, its value can change with location of the object in the universe
Element
vs Compound
Element: A substance that cannot be seperated or broken down into simpler substances by chemical means; all atoms have the same atomic number
Compound: A substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds
Extensive property
vs
Intensive property
Extensive Prop: A property that depends on the extent or size of a system
Intensive Prop: A property that does not depend on the amount of matter present, such as pressure, temperature, density
Physical change
vs
Chemical change
Physical change: A change of matter from one form to another without a change in chemical properties
Chemical change: A change that occurs when one or more substances change into entirely new substances with different properties
Product
vs
Reactant
Prooduct: A substance that forms in a chemical reaction
Reactant: A substance or molecule that participates in a chemical reaction
Physical property
vs
Chemical property
**Physical property: ** A characterisitc of a substance that does not involve a chemical change, such as density, color, hardness
**Chemical property: **A property of matter that describes a substance’s ability to participate in chemical reactions
Mixture
A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined
Solution
A homogenous mixture of two or more substances uniformly
