Chapter 1 Flashcards
Quantitative Statement
-
Qualitative Statement
-Simple statement
-Perceived through senses
-Factual-not subject to interpretation
Ex)The candle is soft and can be cut by a knife.
What is Chemistry?
Study of matter, its composition and change, and the energy effects that accompany these changes.
The Scientific Method
The process followed by a scientist in trying to explain the changes taking place in the universe.
Step 1 of SM
Observation- statement of what is perceived through the senses. The recording of observations is done by performing experiments. Can be qualitative or quantitative.
Step 2 of SM
Search for regularities(patterns).
Step 3 of SM
Propose a Hypothesis
Step 4 of SM
Teat hypothesis through further experimentation.
Step 5 of SM
Formulate a theory.
Law?
Statements of natural phenomena to which there are no exceptions.
Hypothesis?
A tentative explanation of the facts that can be tested further.
Theory?
A well-tested hypothesis. It cannot be proven and is accepted on faith.
Model system?
A real system that correlates well with the theory. (Helps us understand it.)
Ex) Cricket and Baseball
Ex)Polo and Hockey
Solids
- def shape
- def volume
- essentially incompressible
- particles tightly packed
- particles held together by strong forces of attraction
Crystalline solids
Exist in regular, repeating, 3D geometric patterns
