chapter 1 Flashcards
population
the whole set of items being tested
sample
the subset in population to be tested
sampling unit
individual unit in population that can be sampled
sample frame
a list of the sample
census? adv and dis?
data from the whole population
adv= accurate and no bias
dis= time consuming and expensive and lots of data to process
and non reversible
sample? adv and dis?
data from a subunit of pop
adv= cheap and quick and small data to process
dis= biast and group too small to represent
simple random sampling? adv and dis?
RANDOM SAMPLE
each thing is numbered and is picked by a random number generator or lottery names in a hat= needs a sampling frame
adv= bias free and easy and cheap
dis= sample frame needed and if group too large not suitable
systematic sample? adv?and dis?
RANDOM SAMPLE
chosen in intervals (pop/sample=interval) from a list eg every 5th and to chose where we begin counting the intervals we random number generate the number 5 (relating to the intervals) and start from there
adv= simple and quick and suitable for large groups
dis= sampling frame is needed and biast
stratified sampling
RANDOM SAMPLE
population are divided in distinctive groups and to know how many to test from each group= ppl in group divided by ppl in all groups then multiply by quantity needed in q
then simple random sample the groups the pick out the quantity decided from the first part
adv= reflects population and non biast
dis= needs classified groups and sampling frame is needed and of group is too large its too hard
quota sampling? adv? dis?
NON RANDOM SAMPLE
population is divided in groups and the group is proportioned like stratified sampling but the ppl arent picked in groups by simple random they are picked by ppl coming to u through an advert etc as u dont have a sampling frame to simple random sample from
adv= quick unexpensive and no sampling frame needed and easy
dis= biast and population needs to be in groups and time consuming
oppurtunity sampiling? adv? dis?
NON RANDOM SAMPLE
sample taken from ppl present at the time of the study
adv= easy and inexpensive
dis= non representative of population and highly dependent on researcher
what month is it colder in england
october
name from south to north the stations
camborne hurn heathrow leeming leuchars
which are on the coast and what does this mean
camborne and leuchars meaning more wind
moving north= further from equator how does this affect max sun vs avg sun
avg sun= is less
max sun is more as the further u get from the equator yes the colder but during the summer the hours of daylight are very long
