Chapter 1 Flashcards
Factors that have a combined effect on the increasing demand for dental implants
- Aging population lives longer
- Patients are more socially active and esthetically conscious
- Age related tooth loss
- Anatomical consequences of edentulism
- Negative consequences of RPD
- Poor performance of CD
- Psychological aspects of CD
- Benefits of implant supported prostheses
Modern dentistry
Goals: restore the permanent teeth to normal masticatory function, speech, contour, esthetics, & health by removing a disease process from a tooth or replacing teeth with a prosthesis
5 Dental implant team
- Oral & maxillofacial surgeon
- General dentist / restorative dentist
- Dental technologist / dental technician
- Dental hygienists
- Dental nurse
- Aging population lives longer
Age is directly related to every indicator of tooth loss
Geriatric pt (65-70) response must remain positive by considering the ff key points:
- Life expectancy of the pt will extend for two more decades > particularly for non smokers of normal weight
- Current oral condition of the px will generally worsen if it is not addressed or corrected
Implant retained prosthesis ≠ implant supported prosthesis
Implant retained prosthesis
- removable
- fewer dental implants per arch
- utilizes selected areas where bone is sufficient for implant placement
Implant supported prosthesis
- fixed
- use more dental implants per arch
- requires adequate amount of bone throughout d entire arch
- Pxs r more socially active & estheticians conscious
Pxs tend to live longer > DI can motivate pxs to be more socially active or continue to maintain a socially active lifestyle
- Age related tooth loss: Aging process directly affects the oral cavity w/ negative implocations that include the ff:
- Wearing away of tooth enamel
- Medication induced weakening of d teeth > majority of medications can result to xerostomia w/c weakens teeth and in due course lead to d loss of both hard & soft tissue
- Susceptibility of teeth to disease processes
- Tooth loss
- Age related tooth loss (3)
- Single tooth edentulism
- Partial edentulism
- Complete / total edentulism
- Single edentulism
Post region common area of tooth loss especially first molar (first to erupt - first loss) bcs of carious lession , failed endodontic tx, and fracture
