Chapter 1 Flashcards
Mass
Quantity of material
Substance
Kind of matter that can’t be separated into other kinds of matter by any physical process
Element
A substance that can’t be broken down by any chemical reaction into simpler substances
Compound
A substance of two or more elements chemically combined
Mixture
A material that can be separated by physical means into two or more substances
Homogenous mixtures
(Solution) is uniform in all of its properties
Heterogeneous mixture
Physically distinct parts with different properties
Phase
any part of a sample that has a uniform composition and properties (ex: mixed salt and sugar are two different phases)
Precision
Closeness of a set of values from similar measurements of an identical quantity
Accuracy
Closeness of a single value to its true measurement
Multiplication and division
Least number of sig figs
Addition and Subtraction
Least number of decimal places
Speed
Distance/time
Volume
Any length cubed (typically dm3=1L or cm3 1mL)
Density
Mass per unit / volume d=m/V
