CHAPTER 1 Flashcards
Chemical Level
Cells
The basic unit of structure and function in all living things.
Tissues
Are groups of cells that function together
Organs
Groups of tissues with specialized functions
Organ System
Groups of organs that function together
Organism
Composed of organ systems functioning together
Integumentary System
Includes skin, hair, nails, sweat, and sebaceous glands
Protects underlying tissues
Regulates body temperature
Muscular System
Consists of the skeletal muscles
Provides body movement and posture
Skeletal System
Bones, Ligaments, and cartilages
Supports and protects soft tissues
Houses tissues that produce blood cells
Nervous System
Consists of brain, spinal cord, nerves, and sense organs
Sensory receptors
Control other parts of body
Endocrine System
Alter metabolism of specific target cells
Organs; pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, pancreas, ovaries, testes
Cardiovascular System
Heart, blood vessels, and the blood
Distributes oxygen, carbon dioxide, removing wastes from the cell
Lympahtic System
Consists of lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, thymus, spleen, and lymph (fluid)
Drains excess tissue fluid and returns it to the bloodstream
Defends body against infection.
Digestive System
Consists of mouth, tongue, teeth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, intestines, and accessory organs
Receives, breaks down, and absorbs nutrients, and excretes wastes
Respiratory System
Lungs
Air passageways (nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi)
Moves air into and out of lungs, and exchanges O2 and CO2 between the blood and air
