Chapter 1 Flashcards
Matter ?
anything which occupies space or has a mass
Chemistry
it is to study how matter behaves and how one kind of substance can be changed into another
what effect does increase in volume have for pressure and temperature
temperature will increase but pressure decreases
Melting point??
it is a point at which a pure substance turns in to a liquid from a solid
what is a freezing point ?
it is a point at which a pure substance turns into a solid from liquid
what is the melting and freezing point of water ?
0 degrees
what is gallium and its melting point ?
it is a metal which has a melting right above the room temperature
Name some some substances that sublime
Dry ice and iodine
what is sublimation
it is when a solid turns directly into gas and vice versa
what are the differences between melting and boiling points
Boiling:
occurs throughout the liquid
faster processes
at one temperature
the temperature doesnot change due to the energy being utilize forbreaking the bonds
Evaporation:
doesnot occur at a fixed temperature
occcurs at the surface of the liquid
causes cooling
slow processes
what increases the rate of evaporation ?
Surface area and temperature
what is meant by a volatile liquid?
A liquid that evaporates easily for e.g water at a l00 egrees and ethanol at 78 degrees means ethanol is more volatile
how may the boiling point change if we are on a mountain of great height ?
boiling point would decrease
what is a pure substance?
only has one substance without any impurity
how may a impurity effect the melting and boiling point of a substance?
it will lower the melting and raise the boiling point
