Define Health
State of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease OR a state of physical, mental and social functioning that realizes a potential of which a person is capable of functioning
Define nutrition:
The study of how dietary patterns, foods, beverages, food and beverage constituents and supplements influence health and disease.
Describe factors that influence food choice:
- personal preference
- habit
- ethnic heritage or tradition
- availability, convenience, economy
- positive and negative associations
- emotional comfort
- values
- body weight and image
- nutrition & health benefits
What is a macronutrient?
Nutrients required by the body in large quantities. These are the nutrients that produce energy. Carbs, proteins & lipids
What are micronutrients?
Nutrients required by the body in small amounts: include vitamins and minerals
What are the 8 constituents of food & beverages?
Water, macronutrients, micronutrients, phytochemicals, additives, contaminants, microorganisms & alcohol
