chapter 1 Flashcards
General definition of PH informatics
systematic application of information, computer science, and technology to public health practice, research, and learning.
informatik
“computer science in German” for automatic info processing
informatique
it’s a French term
informatika
Russian term for the theory of scientific information
Informatics in general as a field
field concerned with optimal use of information, often aided by the use of technology, to improve individual health, health care, public health, and biomedical research.
Important
Informatics is more about info than technology “which serves as a tool to make best use of info”
Informatics “Friedman”
using technology to help people do cognitive tasks better than about building systems to mimic or replace human expertise
cross-training
bridging an application domain with basic information sciences
Informatics “Greenes and Shortliffe”
rapidly developing scientific field that deals with the storage, retrieval, and optimal use of biomedical information, data, and knowledge for problem solving and decision making
Informatics “Detmer”
transforms health care by analyzing, designing, implementing, and evaluating information and communication systems that enhance individual and population health outcomes, improve patient care, and strengthen the clinician-patient relationship
Biomedical and Health Informatics and its sub-disciplines
“Informatics= Ppl + info + tech”–> biomedical and health info—-> (bioinformatics “cellular”, medical informatics “person”, PH informatics “population”)
medical informatics—-> (clinical informatics, consumer health informatics)
Imaging informatics
focuses on imaging, including the use of picture archiving systems (PACS) to store and retrieve images in health care settings
the application of informatics focused on specific health care disciplines, true, or false?
true
Consumer health informatics
devoted to health informatics from a consumer view, which focused on applications such as personal health records (PHRs)
Clinical research informatics
use of informatics to facilitate clinical research, with increasing emphasis on translational research that aims to accelerate research findings into clinical practice
what is the requirements of PH informatics?
it requires the application of knowledge from
numerous disciplines.
it must incorporate knowledge from the other fields that contribute to public health.
Computer science
theory and application of automatic data processing machines, includes hardware and software design, algorithm development, computational complexity, networking and telecommunications, pattern recognition, and artificial intelligence
Informatics science
encompasses the analysis of the structure, properties, and organization of information, information storage and retrieval, information system and database architecture and design, library science, project management, and organizational issues such as change management and business process reengineering.
Challenges of PH Informatics
1- Obtaining data from multiple disparate sources
2- Accuracy of combining data about particular individuals from various sources
3- Ensuring confidentiality of the health information about specific individuals is not compromised.
Drivers for Change
1- Health Reform, like in vision 2030 “NTP”, and UHC
2- Advances in Information Technology (IT), like the advance in hacking and identity theft.
3- Big Data, 4 Vs “volume, velocity, variety, value”
4- Disruptive Innovation: Mobile technology, Telehealth, Personalized medicine, Personal health record (PHR), Open Access (OA), Gene patenting, Software as a Service (SaaS).
Volume
overwhelming volume of health data
Velocity
rapid accumulation
Variety
inherent variability of the data
Value
worth and purpose of the data
