Wellbeing
a complex combination of all dimensions of health, characterised by an equilibrium in which the individual feels
happy, healthy, capable and engaged
Subjective wellbeing
refers to how people experience the quality of their lives and includes both how they feel about their
lives and what they think about their own personal circumstances
Self-esteem
reflects a person’s overall subjective emotional evaluation of his or her own worth. It is a judgement of oneself as
well as an attitude toward the self.
Self-disclosure
the process of communication by which one person reveals information about himself or herself to another.
This can be in the form of feelings, thoughts, fears, likes and dislikes.
Health
a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing; it is not merely the absence of disease or infirmity
Emotional intelligence
an individual’s ability to recognise and respond to either their own or others’ emotions
Contraception
any method or device that prevents conception and, therefore, a pregnancy
what is the 1946 (WHO) definition
‘health is a state of complete physical,
mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of
disease or infirmity.’
Health Status
an individual’s or a population’s overall health, taking into account various aspects such as life expectancy, amount of disability and levels of disease risk factors.
Self-Assessed Health Status
Based on an individual’s own perception of their health and wellbeing.
Life Expectancy
An indication of how long a person can expect to live, if current death rates do not change
Mortality

an indication of how many deaths occurred in a population in a given period of time, due to a particular cause or all causes.
YLL stands for
years of life lost
YLL
can be used to measure mortality. It is the measure of how many years of expected life are lost due to premature death.
Morbidity
ill health, including disease or disability.
YLD stands for
Years lost due to disability
YLD
can be used as a measure of morbidity, where one YLD is equal to one ‘healthy’ year of life lost, due to time lived with illness or disease.
Incidence
the number of new cases of a condition in a given period (usually 12 months)
Prevalence
the total number of cases of a condition at a given time.
Rate of Hospitalisation
Exploring the rate of hospitalisation among youth provides an indication of levels of ill health that require medical treatment.
Core Activity Limitation
self care, mobility, communication in own langugae
Psychological Distress
Relates to unpleasant feelings and emotions that have an impact on an individual’s level of functioning. Measuring psychological distress can provide information about the level of mental and emotional health and wellbeing experienced.
Sociocultural Factors
The social and cultural conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age. These include socioeconomic status, social connections, family and cultural influences, food security, early life experiences and access to affordable, culturally appropriate healthcare.
