Chapter 1 Flashcards
Bivariate Data
data on each of two variables, where one value is paired with another
Categorical Variable
a variable that has 2+ categories with no intrinsic ordering
Center
the middle of distribution, typically found with graphical analysis or calculating the mean/median
Conditional Distribution
probability distribution for sub-population or sub-category
Data
facts & statistics collected together for reference or analysis
Distribution
mathematical function giving the probabilities of different outcomes
Individual
people or objects included in a statistical study
Interquartile Range (IQR)
middle half of data that lies between upper and lower quartiles
Marginal Distribution
probability distribution of variables in subset
Mean
mathematical average of values
Median
middle number in a sequence of numbers
Mode
the value appearing the most in data sets
Outlier
a point that differs significantly from the other observations
Population
a set of similar items, events, or individuals drawn for a study
Quantitative Variable
variables whose values are numeric as a result of counting or measuring
First Quartile
the value under which 25% of data points are found when arranged in increasing order
Third Quartile
the value over which 25% of data points are found when arranged in an increasing order
Range
difference between largest and smallest values in a set of data
Spread
measures describing how similar or varied data is from an item
Standard Deviation
square root of the difference from the mean squared divided by the number of values
Two Way Table
a way to display frequencies and relative frequencies for 2 variables
Unimodal
probability distribution which has a single peak
Univariate Data
data on only one variable
Variance
standard deviation squared
Symmetric
distribution in which the right & left sides mirror each other
