What did the report Durham say the 2 problems were?
- An ethnic conflict between the French Canadians and the English
- Absence of real democracy
What were the solutions proposed by Durham?
- To assimilate the French Canadians by immigration (rendering them a minority)
- Unite the two canadas
- Establish a responsible government
What was the consequence of the Durham report?
L’Acte d’Union (1840)
What did the L’Acte D’Union change?
- Unification of the two canadas to make Canada-Uni
- L’assemblée legislative was made up of equal deputes.

What were the disadvantages that the French Canadians experience with L’Acte D’Union
- Even though there were more French Canadians, there was still equal representation (42 députées)

Because you had to have majority in both of Canadians government to pass laws

They went through 10 minority governments in 10 years.

George Brown
Why did george brown want rep by pop?
Because now that the population of Haut-Canada is higher than Bas-Canada, it is favorable for the English Canadians.

A centralist mindset (they had the ability to block laws; Droit de désaveu)
What does centralist mean?
The power only goes to the federal government
What do the provinces do to counter centralism?
They claim provincial autonomie and they have a conference in 1887
