Chapter 1 Flashcards
What is the internet
Billions of connected computers
What do packet switches do?
Forwards chunks of data to their destination
What is the network edge?
Where devices connect to the internet
Network Core
Mesh of interconnected routers aka the internet
What do hosts do
Transport packets(data) onto access networks
What is guided media and examples
Physical connection links
Example: copper wire, fiber optic, coax, wired Ethernet
What is unguided media and examples
Nonphysical connection links
Example: radio, wifi, bluetooth
Packet Switching
A form of sending packets where the connection is shared and multiple packets can be sent
Circuit Switching
A form of sending packets where the connection is not shared and only dedicated between sender and receiver
Types of packet delays
Transmission Delay, Propagation Delay, Nodal Processing delay, Queuing Delay
What is transmission delay
Time needed to push all the packet bits on the transmission link
What is Propagation delay
Time it take for one bit to travel from one end of the link to the other
What is Nodal Processing delay
Time spent processing a packet
What is Queuing Delay
Time spent in a queue waiting for space on the router
To calculate transmission Delay
L(Length of packet)/R(transmission time)
