Chapter 1 Flashcards
Pure substance
Contain a single component or multiple components.
-multi components are separated by chem reactions
Mixture
Always have multiple components
-separated by physical methods
Single component
elements
multi component
compounds
homogeneous mixtures
even distribution
heterogeneous mixture
uneven distribution
Methods of Separation:
Physical Change
Does NOT change the composition of a component
Methods of Separation: Chemical Change
DOES change the composition of a component
Intensive property
independent of sample size
-color, freezing point, boiling point, etc
extensive property
dependent on a samples size
-mass and volume
Physical Property
doesn’t change the composition of a substance
Chemical Property
Changes the composition of a substance
Practice Sig Figs, Dimensional Analysis, C to K conversions, density, and specific gravity.
K= C + 375.15
C= K - 273.15
F= (9 F/ 5 C) x C + 32 F
d= m/v
specific gravity= density of a solution/density of water.
-density of water is usually 1 with its units.
Accuracy
how close you are to a desired target
Precision
how reproductible are your actions
