Body Planes
Imaginary planes that subdivide the body in reference to anatomic position
How many fundamental body planes are there and what are they called?
4
-Sagittal
-Coronal
-Horizontal
-Oblique
How do sagittal planes divide the body?
Into right and left segments
Midsagittal Plane (MSP)
A specific sagittal plane that passes though the midline and divides the body into equal right and left halves
How do coronal planes pass through the body?
Vertically from side to side
Divides the body into anterior and posterior parts
Midcoronal plane (MCP)
Specific plane that passes through the midline and divides the body into equal anterior and posterior halves
Also called midaxillary plane
Horizontal Plane
Passes crosswise through the body or body part
Divides the body into superior and inferior portions
Also called transverse, axial, or cross-sectional
Oblique Plane
Pass through a body part at any angle between the three previous planes
What are the two great cavities?
