chapter 1 Flashcards
What is the definition of science?
Science is the study of the natural world ( living things ) and physical world ( energy, matter and the structure of matter )
What are the attitudes essential for science?
- curiosity, open-mindedness, objective
- integrity
- perseverance
- ethics
- creativity and responsibility
What are the different types of variables?
- independent
changed variable ( can only be one ) - dependent variable
measured variable - constant variable
kept the same, no change
What is integrity?
Integrity is to never change your observations an =d results ( findings )
What is curiosity?
Being curious is about wanting to know about unexpected results
What is perseverance?
Perseverance is about finding about the result still the end. or sticking to the truth until discovery is proven.
What is objectively?
Being objectively is to follow facts and not be wildly influenced by others
What is being open-minded?
Being open-minded is to be willing to accept that something could happen contrary to popular beliefs
What are scientific knowledge derive of?
Five methods:
1. make an observation ( encounter a puzzling situation based on observation and experience )
2. ask a question ( hypothesis ; ask questions to obtain more information and generate ideas )
3. make a hypothesis ( form a smart explanation for the observation )
4. conduct your experiment ( to collect further experiments )
5. draw conclusions ( analyze the results and evidence collected to form a conclusion )
What are the types of data?
- quantitative
usually numerical, involves sense and measurements taken using instruments ( shows quantity ) - qualitative
usually descriptive, expressed in words and drawings, involves senses and measurements taken with instruments
( color blue, texture rough/smooth, odor pungent , taste sweet/bitter )

What are the different types of flame?
- Luminous
- produces a lot of soot
- the outer cone is yellow while the inner cone is blue ( which makes it more visible )
- obtained when the air-hole is closed - Non-luminous ( used for heating )
- hotter
- does not produce soot
- outer cone is dark blue while the inner cone is light blue in color
- obtained when the air-hole is opened
-
Steps to operate a Bunsen burner?
- Turn the collar to close the airhole
- Light up a lighter or a matchstick and hold it above the barrel
- Then using your free hand, turn on the gas tap
- A Luminous flame is produced.
- Open the air-hole to obtain a Non-luminous flame
What is the purpose of a air-hole and what does it prevent?
- the air-hole prevents too much oxygen from entering
- which prevents a strike back where the flame starts to burn with the barrel
Substances that react violently when heated or struck
flash powder
