What is sport psychology?
the study of people and their behaviors in sport and exercise activities and the practical application of that knowledge
What are the two objectives of sport psychology?
- understanding the effects of psych factors on sport performance ( bodily function)
- understand the effects of participation in physical activity on overall health (mental and well-being)
What are some common question in regard to first objective?
- How does anxiety affect a soccer player’s ability to perform?
- Does lacking self-confidence influence a child’s ability to learn to swim?
What are some questions to ask in regard to the second objective?
- Does running reduce anxiety and depression?
- Does participation in daily PE class improve a child’s self esteem?
What are the 3 roles of Sport and Exercise Psychologists?
Research: aimed at advancing knowledge (academic journals and meetings)
Teaching: university courses on psych or sports science
Consulting: working with athletes
What are the two Sport Psychology Specialties and what do they do?
- Clinical sport psychologists: license psychologists that work with people with emotional disorders and are trained to help athletes with problems such as eating disorders and substance abuse
- Educational Sport Psychology Specialists: mental coach approach. Have training in sports/exercise science and educate coaches and athletes on anxiety/self-esteem development
Theory of science is derived from?

What are the scientific guidelines?
systematic, controlled, empirical, and critical
What is the difference between a study and an experiment?
Study = observe and assess without changing environment
Experiment = manipulating variables while observing them
What are the three approaches to sport and exercise psychology?
- Psycho-physiological orientation = understanding processes of the brain in terms of behavior (
- Social-psychological orientation = interaction of social environment and personality of athlete
- Cognitive-behavioral orientation = behavior determined by both environment and thoughts (differences in confidence and anxiety among soccer players with or without burnout)
What are the 6 ethical standards?
