Chapter 1 Flashcards
What is mechanics
The branch of physical sciences concerned with the study of motion of objects subjected to the action of forces
3 branches of Mechanics
Rigid-body mechanics, deformable-body mechanics, fluid mechanics
Branches of rigid-body mechanics
Statics, dynamics
Rigid body
A body containing large quantity of particles that remain at fixed distances apart before and after the action of a force
Statics
Study of bodies in equilibrium…study of bodies at rest or moving with constant velocity
Dynamics
Study of accelerated motion of bodies
Length
Locates the specific position of an object in space, and used to quantify the size of a physical system
Time
Conceived as a succession of events from past through present to future
Mass
A measure of the quantity of matter used to compare the action of one body to that of another
Force
A pull or push exerted by one body on another
Particle
Any object with mass but a negligible size
Conc force
The effect of loading which is assumed to act at a point on a body
Newton’s first law of motion
A particle originally at rest or moving along a straight line with a constant velocity tends to remain in this state unless subjected to an external unbalanced force
Newton’s 2nd
The time rate of change of linear momentum of a particle subjected to an unbalanced force is directly proportional to the mag of the force and acts in the direction of the force
Newton’s 3rd
The mutual forces of action and reaction b/n two bodies are equal, opposite and collinear
