Thomas Hobbes’ State of Nature:

A

The State of Nature, the Natural Condition of humans, is what exists when there is no government, no laws, no common power that restrains human nature and that directs us to escape tribalism, where, as Hobbes said, “life is nasty, brutish, and short”.

The purpose of politics?

A

Rise from the state of nature. The art of compromise. Not to divide us and help us define our tribes better, but to unite us and help us find ways to compromise; to live together in disagreement.

Q

What happens when politics becomes an end in itself rather than a means to compromise?

A

1) Candidates, politicians and citizens begin to do things simply for the political benefit and not for a separate, definable societal good.
2) The end of politics ceases to be compromise and becomes what ever is expedient to gain more power, more influence, and to perpetuate political survival and party hegemony.
SUMMARY: We go back to tribalism.
