Hospital Standardization
- 1918
- movement was inaugurated by American College of Surgeons
- raised the standards of surgery by establishing minimum quality standards for hospitals

organization of the Association of Record Librarians
- 1928
- 35 members of Club of Record Clerk met at Hospital Standardization conference in Boston
- at end of meeting, Association of Record Librarians of North America formed
- had 58 individuals
- members admitted from 25 out of 48 states
Approval of formal education and certification program
- Early HIM understood for an occupation to be recognized as a profession must be preliminary training
- 1929: work began on formulation of prescribed course of study
- 1932: association adopted first formal curriculum for HIM education
- 1934: first school for medical record librarians surveyed and approved by ARLNA
- 1941: 10 schools approved
- formal approval prcess of academic programs was precursor to current accreditation prgram managed by Commission on Accreditation for health informatic and information management education

evolution of Practice
- varies names given to health record association and associated credentials reveal a lot of evolution of profession and its practice
- 1944: association known as ARLNA until canadian member formed own organization. American Association of Medical Record Librarians
- 1970: changed name to eliminate librarains, American Medical Record Association
- 1991: another name change, American Health Information Management Association
- 1999: AHIMA House of Delegates approved credential name changes:
- -Registered REcord Administrator - Registered Health Information Administrator
- -Accredited Record Technician - Registered Health Information Technician
credentials
- formal agreement granting individual permission to practice in profession, conferred by national professional organization dedicated to speicifrc area of healthcare practice
- accordance permission by healthcare organization to be licensed, independent practitioners to practice in specific area of specialty within organization
- required to pass an exam to obtain credential intially, then participate in continuing education to maintain credential
traditional practice
-emphasized need to ensure complete and accurate health records, compiled and maintained for every patient

-involved planning, developing, and implementing system to control, monitor, and track quantilty of record content and flow, storage, and retrieval of health records

Information-oriented management practice
- traditional model of practice roles is not appropriate for today’s information-intensive and automated healthcare environment
- traditional model: focused is department focused with emphasis on task
- -task include processing and tracking records rather than processing and tracking information
- information grows out of data manipulation using data from variety of shared data sources, both internal and external to organization
- HIM professional to manage this information, informatic skills, data analytics skills, data use skills required
information governance
is crucial due to today’s information age
-“an organization-wide framework for managing information throughout lifecycle and supporting organization strategy, operation, regulatory, legal, risk and environmental requirements”
informatics
- field of study that focuses on use of technology to improve access to, utilization of information
- use software applications, databases, managing process
data analytics
- examining raw data with purpose of drawing conclusions about that information
- include healthcare statistics, research methods, interpretation
