Chapter 1 Flashcards
Mass
Amount of matter present in a sample
Matter
Anything that has mass and occupies space
Solid
Definite shape and definite volume
Liquid
Indefinite shape definite volume
*takes the shape of its container to the extent that it fills the container
Gas
Indefinite shape indefinite volume
*completely fills its container adopting both the containers volume & it’s shape
State of matter of a particular substance depends on:
- Temperature
- Surrounding pressure
- Strength of the forces holding its structural particles together
Physical states of matter are:
Solid
Liquid
Gas
Physical property
- Characteristics that can be observed without changing the basic identity of the substance.
- Includes color, odor, physical state, melting point, boiling point, hardness
Chemical property
Characteristic that describes the way a substance undergoes or resists change to form a new substance
Ex: copper objects turn green in air
Iron metal rusts in an atmosphere of moist air. Is this a physical or chemical property?
Chemical property
Mercury metal is a liquid at room temperature. Is this is physical or chemical property?
Physical property
Nickel metal dissolves into acid to produce a light green solution. Is this a chemical or physical property?
Chemical property
Physical change
Process in which a substance changes its physical appearance but not it’s chemical composition.
Ex: boiling or freezing water
Chemical change
Process in which chemical composition of a substance changes. Involves conversion of material into one or more new substances.
Ex: rusting of iron objects left exposed to moist air
Pure substance
Single kind of matter that cannot be separated into other kinds of matter by any physical means.
Mixture
Physical combination of two or more substances
