Chapter 1 Flashcards
Lecture 1
Autonomous robots
systems with the ability to work for prolonged periods without human intervention in unknown environmental conditions
Industrial robots
preform predetermined sequence of movements and operate in a defined, structured environment
What was the first electrically engineered robot?
Grey Walter’s tortoise robot
What robot planned and navigated using ‘classical’ AI techniques
Shakey the robot
Behavioral approach
systems are situated and embodied; robots with this approach have multiple modules responsible for different tasks
Situated
are situated in the world; deals with the constantly updated environment
Embodiment
robots have bodies and experience the world directly; actions are part of the dynamic of the world and have immediate feedback
Robot
an artificial system that (i) has a physical body that includes actuators, sensors, and a brain, (ii) is situated in a physical environment and eventually in a social environment including other robots and/or humans, and (iii) exhibits a behavior performing a function
Sensors
extract information from the robot’s environment; measures physical properties, sound waves, light waves, air temperature, robot velocity, etc.
Actuators
enable robots to move and interact with their environment
Adaptive approach
robots, through a learning process, develop behaviors and skills that allow them to autonomously preform tasks
Humanoid Robots
Follow behavior-based robotics paradigm; goal is to build robots with human-like intelligence
Cognitive Robots
Robots that take inspiration from human cognition
What is the aim of cognitive robotics?
to make intelligent, embodied systems that make decisions and act autonomously in realistic environments
Social Robots
Robots that interact with people in a socially acceptable manner
