Chapter 1 (1.1 observing living things) Flashcards
What are the five characteristics
Reproduce Grow Need energy Respond to environment Get rid of waste
What is the difference between living things and non living things
Living things: A living thing must have the five characteristics to be living (example of a living thing is humans and animals because they have all the five characteristics.)
Non living things: A non living thing is a thing that doesn’t have the five characteristics. (Example of a living thing is a pencil or book because they don’t have the five characteristics.)
To see small things we use a?
Compound light microscope
To see really small things we use an?
Electron Microscope
What are the two types of electron microscopes?
Scanning and transmission electron microscope
How do you calculate magnification power with a compound light microscope?
Objective lens x Eye piece lens= total magnification
Example: high objective lens (x40) x Eyepiece Lens (x10)= total magnification (x400)
In what year did microscopes start being used?
Late 1600’s and early 1700’s
