Electronic Medical Records
(EMR) An electronic version of patient files within a single organization
Electronic Health Records
(EHR) A computer system used to improve healthcare delivery; EHRs replace traditional paper medical records and make health information accessible to healthcare providers across the world with only a few keystrokes.

Interoperability
the ability of an EHR system to exchange data with other sources of health information, including pharmacies, laboratories, and other healthcare providers.
No Interoperability
Stand-alone systems that do not communicate
Technical Interoperability Level
Allows systems to exchange bits and bytes of data without any ability to interpret the shared data.
Syntactic Interoperability Level
The level that introduces a common data format for information exhcange, but the meaning of the data cannot be interpreted
Semantic Interoperability Level
The level that allows the meaning of data that be shared and information interpreted
Computer Protocol
A standardized method of communicating or transmitting data between two computer systems
Health Level Seven International
(HL7) The most common communication protocol that focuses on the international group of collaborating healthcare subject matter experts and information scientists
Health IT Ecosystem
A collection of individuals and groups that are interested in health information technology
Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology
(ONC) The US federal body that recommends policies, procedures, protocols, and standards for interoperability.
Learning Healthcare System
(LHS) An approach to improving the quality of health care by using patient clinical data from EHRs to drive medical research, and by using medical research to influence clinical practices.
Nationwide Health Information Network
(NwHIN) A set of standards that enable the secure exchange of health information over the Internet
Health Information Technology for Economic & Clinical Health Act
(HITECH) An act enacted in February 20009 a as part of the ARRA that promoted the nationwide implementation of EHR technology
Health Information Management
(HIM) Professionals hat plan information systems, develop health policy, identify current and future information needs, and practice the maintenance and care of health records
American Health Information Management Association
(AHIMA) A professional organization that provides resources, education, and networking with other professionals, confusing on the quality of health information used in the delivery of healthcare
Regional Extension Center
(REC)
Registered Health Information Administrator
(RHIA) Professional who works as a liaison between healthcare providers, organization staff, payers, and patients; an expert in managing health information and the professionals responsible for managing health information.
Registered Health Information Technician
(RHIT) Professional who performs the technical procedures relate to the management of health information, frequently working in positions of medical coding, billing, and data management.
