To communicate, in a shorthand, the core information about a chord for a performer. It should be as simply, clear, and easy to understand as possible.

In parenthesis to separate them from the basic chord.
What are the 4 pieces of information contained in a chord symbol?
- The root of the chord
- The quality of the supporting triad (Major, minor, augmented, etc.)
- The highest degree of the structure when built in 3rds above the root. 7th, 9th, 11th, or 13th.
- Any alterations or addd pitches to the chord.
What are the components of a chord scale
- Chord tones.
- Available Tensions.
- Harmonically avoided notes (HAN)
Define “Tension”
The upper extension of the 7th chord that adds color and DOES NOT ALTER THE INTENDED SOUND.
Define “Harmonic Avoid Note” (HAN)
A note that, if used harmonically, will interfere with, or destabilize, the chord sound and is therefore AVOIDED harmonically.
What is an Avoid note.
Avoid notes are nonchord tones a which are a HALF STRP ABOVE a chord tone. They are marked as black notes.
What are the 2 places a HAN is actually acceptable?
On the Dorian chord scale and on Dominant 7th Chords.
What exactly is an Avoid note?
It is the pitch from which each chord derives its characteristic sound.
