Chapter 1 Flashcards
What is food packaging?
A coordinated system which ensures efficient saftey and delivery of food.
What is food packaging tech? Market pull and tech pull?
Using practical solutions in material science, food science and information technology to make sure that food is safe during all aspects of the supply chain
Describe the following ways packagin is modified to satisfy
- consumer lifestyle-
- values-
- profits
- food saftey and biosecurity
- food packaging regulations
- environment concerns:
Consumer lifestyle- makes things easier to use, nutitious, healthy and safe
values- Benefit to cost ratio is increased. Increase benefit by increasing packaging function and decrease cost by using less material and speeding up production
Profits- Expand business and profits through innovation which leads to more competition which leads to more innovation
Food saftey and biosecurity-
- Tamper evident packaging
- Package integrity inspection
- Permeable packaging
- Antimicrobial films
Food packaging regulations:
-Regulations against contaminant levels that are harmful to consumers being present in foods
-Drives research into the movement of compounds from packaging material into food products
Environment concerns:
- Increasing demand for easy to use, reusable materials that are easy to incinerate.
Packaging functions:
- convinience
- communication
- containment
- convenience: easy to use, ex: microwavable, resealable packaging
- communication: Convince consumer to buy product, brand identity, nutritious facts, written language and color
- containment: contains food and depends on size, weight and shape of food
How are packages modified to respond to these three types of env.
Physical-Mechanical strength and thermal stability to protect form stresses during processing and the supply chain
Ambient-protect from chemicals(o2 and moisture), microbes and light
Human-Push to make more environmentally sustainable made from appropriate materials, easier to use, colorful and attractive.
What are the different types of packaging forms?
Flexible-like a bag or pouch which can change shape when pressure is applied to it
Semi rigid-plastic container, or aluminum foil pan which doesn’t change shape but can be easily altered by force
Rigid-metal or steel container which will not change unless you exert a tremendous amount of force to the container.
What is the purpose of function technology tables
To evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of packaging functions based on their socioeconomic, or environmental features. This lets you know how effective certain packaging features are in particular socioeconomic or environmental areas. For example Containment may enhance ambient packaging more than physical, and human while communication may enhance human more than anything else. It also lets you know how much each feature is strengthened by each function and which feature was strengthened the most by each function.
