Chapter 1: 1-6 Flashcards
Integers
negative numbers, zero, positive numbers (rational)
whole
zero, positive numbers (rational)
natural
positive numbers, no zero (rational)
rational
includes terminating and repeating decimals. and zero, negative, and positive numbers
irrational
square roots, decimals that don’t terminate or repeat, and pi. Can’t be written as a fraction
closure property
addition: a+b is a real number. multiplication: ab is a real number
commutative property
addition: a+b = b+a. multiplication: ab = ba
associative property
addition: (a+b) + c = a + (b+c). multiplication: (ab)c + a(bc)
identity property
addition: a+0 = a, 0+a = a (additive identity). multiplication: a x 1 = a, 1 x a = a (multiplicative identity)
inverse property
addition: a+(-a) = 0. multiplication: a x 1/a = 1. a not equal to zero
