chapter 1, 1-3 Flashcards
The combining of atoms to form molecules or ionic compounds
Chemical Bonding
an interaction that holds atoms or ions together
Chemical Bond
an electron that is found in the outermost shell of an atom and determains chemical properties
Valence electron
a bond that forms when electrons are transferred from one atom to another, which results in a posotive ion and negative ion
Ionic Bond
a charged particle that forms when an atom or group of atoms gains or loses one or more electrons
Ion
the regular pattern in which a crystal is arranged
Crystal lattice
a bond formed when atoms share one or more pairs of electrons
Covalent Bond
the smallest unit of a substance that keeps all of the physiclal and chemical properties of that substance
Molecule
a bond formed by the attraction between positively charged metal ions and the electrons around them
Metallic Bond
a molecule that consists of two atoms
Diatomic molecule
a diagram that shows element symbol surrounded by dots representing valence electrons and dashes that represent pairs of shared electrons
Lewis diagram
a group of chemical elements that do not readily for chemical bonds
Noble gas
an element that is generally a poor conductor of heat ad electricity
Nonmetal
a rule of thumb that states that atoms are most stable when surronded by eight valence electrons
Octet rule
a particular region where electrons can orbit the nucleus
Shell
