chapter 03 Flashcards
Central Nervous System (CNS)
Brain (in the skull).
Spinal Cord (in the spine).
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
Located outside of the skull and spine
Serves to bring information into the CNS and carry signals out of the CNS.
Skeletal / Somatic
associated with the voluntary control of the body movements via the use of skeletal muscles.
Autonomic
a component of the peripheral nervous system that regulates involuntary physiologic processes including heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, digestion, and sexual arousal; organs.
Efferent (motor)
Information expressed
Afferent (sensory)
Information accepted
Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)
plasma in the ventricles of the brain + the subarachnoid spaces of the cranium + spine (not normally found in gray matter)
meninges
three layers of membrane that protect the brain + spinal cord
dura mater
“tough mother,” outer membrane
arachnoid
spider-web-like
pia mater
“plous mother,” adheres to CNS surface
