chapt 8 Flashcards
what are acids (1) and properties of acid (6)
substance that produce hydrogen ions in aq solutions
-> sour taste
-> acidic oxides dissolve in water, bcm acids which conducts elect.
-> turn blue litmus red
-> metal + acid = salt and h2
-> base (metal oxide/ hydroxide) + acid = salt and water (neutralisation)
-> metal carbonate + acid = salt water and co2
what is a base (1) and properties (6)
any metal oxide/ hydroxide as they contain oxide/ hydroxide ion
-> bitter taste
-> slippery and soapy
-> basic oxides dissolve in water, bcm alkali which conducts elect.
-> turn red litmus blue
- Alkali (soluble in water which produce hydroxide ions)
- heat with ammonium salts = ammonia gas
non metal oxides? (2)
Acidic oxides : react with alkalis to form salt and water
Neutral oxides : Neither acidic or basic
metallic oxides? (2)
Amphoteric oxides : react with both acids and alkali
Basic oxides : reacts with acids to form salt and water
