Govt response to diverse socio-econ (SG)

A
  • ## SHARED RESPONSIBILITY APPROACHDEFINE: Individuals, community groups & government all work tgt to ensure everyone’s needs are met in a socio-econ diverse society
    ———
    Eg:
  • Indiv are responsible for own healthcare
  • Indiv encouraged to work & save for own healthcare
  • BUT indiv who still can’t afford healthcare & apply for help from govt through Medifund
    ————
    HENCE
  • EFFECTIVE AS Indiv & govt work tgt to ensure everyone’s needs are met
  • Indiv are responsible so they will want to work hard to afford for their own healthcare
  • SO govt’s burdens are lessened

Q

Ageing population -> Challenges for SG

A

DEFINE: Ageing population is when the percentage of elderly in a population rises
- % of working ppl population falls
——
- By 2030, elderly population expected to double
- 2010 to 2019, SG tripled its healthcare budget to $11.3 billion
-> to meet increasing healthcare demands from elderly
—————-
HENCE
CHALLENGING AS:
- Larger elderly population puts greater pressure on the smaller working population
-> who have to support the growing healthcare needs of elderly

- When Working population stressed to work
- less time to have families, &
- worsens the prob of ageing population

Q

Increased taxation -> Challenges in SG

A
  • 2023 to 2024
  • GST increase from 7% - 9%
  • If tax keeps increasing, it may deter foreigners from working in SG
    ———-/—-
    HENCE
    CHALLENGING AS:
  • Less foreigners will work in SG
  • smaller & less vibrant workforce
  • Locals will also have higher daily expenditures
    -> can’t buy daily necessities
-> w/ higher standard of living, ppl are less likely to spend on additional courses to upskill themselves
-> Creates vicious cycle as their salary will be low & stuck in low income group

Q

Limitations in upskilling and training

A

Eg
- by **2030* retirement age increase to 65
- re-employment age 70
- Older workers have to juggle their current jobs with attending upskilling courses to stay relevant to the changing work environment
BUT
- Employers do not accept and accommodate older workers as much as younger ones
- becuz employers think they may be less productive
-> so older workers are also unsure if courses will increase their employability
—————
HENCE CHALLENGING AS:
- SG has ageing population
- more of workforce will be seniors
- if employers less willing to accept them
-> workforce smaller
