Chapt 11: Thermal Properties of Matter Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 2 types of internal energy?
A
-
Internal KE
- Due to motion of particles
- Affects temperature
-> Higher the temp, the more vigorously the particles move, hence higher KE -
Internal PE
- Due to stretching/compressing of intermolecular or interatomic bonds as particles move
- Amt of PE stored depends on
-> the forces between particles- > how far they are
- Correlates to change of state of substance
- > how far they are
2
Q
What is heat capacity?
A
Definition: The amt of thermal energy needed to raise the temp of a substance by 1 K (or 1°C).
- SI unit: Joules per Kelvin (JK ⁻¹) or Joules per degree Celsius (J °C⁻¹)
3
Q
What is specific heat capacity?
A
Definition: The amt of thermal energy required to raise the temperature of a unit mass (eg. 1kg) of substance by 1K or 1°C.
- SI unit: Joule per Kilogram per Kelvin (J kg ⁻¹ K ⁻¹) or Joule per Kilogram per degree Celsius (J kg ⁻¹ °C ⁻¹)
