Chapt 1 Vocab Flashcards
Chemistry
The study of the matter, its nature, properties, and transformations.
Matter
Anything that has mass and occupies space, that is, all things you can see, touch, taste, or smell.
Scientific Method
Rigorous method used by scientists to expand a body of knowledge
Theory
Is a set of tested hypotheses that give an explanation of a natural phenomenon.
Property
A characteristic useful for identifying a substance, or object. These include size, color, temperature, etc.
Physical Change
A change that does not affect the chemical makeup of a substance or object. (Ice melting, glass breaking)
Chemical Change
A change in the chemical makeup of a substance, or object. (Iron rusting, paper burning)
Solid
A substance that has a definite shape and volume
Liquid
A substance that has a definite volume but assumes the shape of its container.
Gas
A substance that has neither a definite volume nor a definite shape.
Pure Substance
A substance that has a uniform chemical composition throughout. (Surprisingly rare)
Mixture
A blend of two or more substances, each which retains its identity.
Homogeneous Mixture
A uniform substance that has the same composition throughout. (Like sugar water)
Heterogeneous Mixture
A non-uniform mixture that has regains of different composition. (Like beef stew)
Element
A fundamental substance that cannot be broken down chemically into any simpler substance.
Chemical compound
A pure substance that can be broken down into simpler substances by chemical reaction.
Chemical reaction
Is the change of a substance into a new one that has a different chemical identity.
Water—(electric current)–>H+O
The arrow is the chemical reaction
Reactant
Is written on the left. This is what you start with.
Products
Are written in the right. This is what you end with, the new elements/compounds being made.
