Chaper 7 - Maintain Vehicle Stability Flashcards
When is vehicle stability reduced?
A vehicles stability is reduced when you brake, accelerate, or steer because the vehicles weight, distribution, and balance is altered; reducing tyre grip.
What does ABS prevent…
If you brake too hard, ABS prevents the wheel from locking up.
What does traction control prevent?
If you accelerate too harshly, traction control prevents the wheel from spinning excessively.
What does Electronic Stability Programmes prevent…
If you steer too sharply, ESP can help prevent the resulting oversteer or understeer from developing into a skid.
What can you minimise the risk of skidding?
1) Check the vehicle - tyre, tyre tread and brakes.
2) Observe Weather Conditions - Skidding is more likely in bad weather conditions.
3) Anticipate and Plan - Adjust your driving to the weather conditions.
What are the four factors that can cause skidding?
1) Driving too fast for the circumstances.
2) Harsh Acceleration.
3) Excessive and Sudden Braking.
4) Coarse Steering.
