Chaper 1-5 Flashcards
Teleology
Giving a purpose to something that has only a function.
Example- A plant species has red petals because it wants to attract pollinators.
Steps to the Scientific Method? (4)
1) Observation
2) Hypothesis
3) Experimental Design
4) Conclusion
Deductive Logic

Inductive Logic
Specific to General
“Building a Case”

Manipulation of variables
Levels of Biological Organization
Atoms Molecules Organic molecules Organelles Cells Tissue Organ Organ system Organism Population Community Ecosystem
Element
Fundamental units = atoms of one kind can not be broken down into another substance (by any chemical means)
Molecule
Two or more atoms bounded together.
Cell
A membrane bound structure that is the basic unit of life
Tissue
Grouping of similar cells that work together to preform a specialized function
Organs
Groups of different types of tissues performing a function.
Organ Systems
Group of organs preforming a complex function together
Example:
Heart and lungs preform together to deliver O2 throughout the body.
Organism
An individual living organism composed of many organ systems working together.
Population
Group of same species that are spatially close enough to form a reproductive unit.
Community
Groups of different species that interact with each other.
