Chap.9 Flashcards
What is cell division?
Cell division is the process by which a cell divides into 2 or more cells.
What are the 2 types of cell division in eukaryotes?
mitosis and meiosis
How do somatic cells reproduce?
mitosis, a process where the nucleus divides
How do gametes reproduce?
meiosis
Are gametes produced by meiosis haploid or diploid?
haploid, 1 copy of each chromosome
Are somatic cells produced by mitosis haploid or diploid?
diploid, 2 copies of each chromosome
What makes up a genotype?
The double set of genetic instructions present in an organism makes up its genotype
What is the phenotype?
The physical expression of the genotype is the phenotype
What is the cell cycle?
It is a series of events that take place in a cell between the times that it is produced and when it divides to produce new daughter cells.
What are the stages of the cell cycle
G1, S, G2, M
What happens in the G1 stage of the cell cycle?
Growth and preparation for DNA synthesis
What happens in the S phase?
DNA replication
What happens in the G2 phase?
cell grows an ensures DNA replication is complete e
What happens in M phase?
Mitosis. PMAT
What occurs in Prophase?
DNA condenses and coils into chromosomes as the nuclear membrane begins to dissolve. Appear as double chromatids
