students complained as the war had already disrupted thier education once, if they joined ns, their education would be disrupted again

the workers felt that the employees were being treated better than the employees
e.g, workers were not given leave to attend union meetings

they dismissed 299 workers and the dismissed workers went on a hunger strike

the singapore chinese middle school students union was shut down due to its supposed communist activities, in response, 5000 students took over their schools and demanded the re-regestration of the SCMSSU
reasons for merger?
- the british would only grant singapore independence if it merged with malaya
- PAP persued it as there was a belief that Singapore could not survive in the long term without a merger as singapore did not have an economic base
