Define proprietary colonies.
A colony to witch the king assigned a proprietor(s) to govern.
What was a charter colony?
A charter colony is a colony run by a trade company witch gets its authorization from the king.
Royal colony-
A colony that was controlled by the crown through a governor.
Headrights-
Fifty acre tracts given to those who paid for their passage or were indentured
Indenture-
A work contract that lasted 4-7 years
New England-
In 1614, john smith,who was commissioned by the Virginia company, found a region that was rich with furs and fish. This land,witch Smith called New England,reorganized the Plymouth company into its New England’s council. New England is made up of these
colonies:Vermont,Massachusetts, new Hampshire , Connecticut, and Rhode Island.
Pilgrims-
People who had left their homes and lands in order to worship God freely.
Puritans-
A group of Anglicans who wanted to purify the state church from within by pushing the reforms that would rid England of Romanist influences and bring greater spiritual vitality to the nation.
Separatists-
Also known as independents, believed that each local congregation should be independent of all other churches.
William Bradford-
Leading a group of thirty-five pilgrims,sailed from Holland in the speedwell. They joined the mayflower in england and together set out for America. He later became the governor of Plymouth.
Mayflower compact-
Bound the settlers into a “civil body politic” by which they they agreed to submit to the laws and duly elected leadership of the colony.
Great migration-
A time in the 1630’s when fifty-thousand settlers sailed from England to various colonies in America and the west-indies.
John Winthrop-
A Cambridge educated man, a leading officer and financier in the Massachusetts bay company, and the founding governor of Massachusetts. Winthrop envisioned his colony as a spiritual commonwealth.
Covenant-
The puritans belief which said that God had a covenant with his people in regard to their salvation, and that they, in turn, covenanted with one another to pursue common goals- in this case to build a holy commonwealth.
Harvard college-
Was established in Boston in 1636 to train young men for the ministry. This was America’s first college.
