air pollution
is a mixture of solid particles and gases in the air.
primary pollutant
is an air pollutant emitted directly from a source.
secondary pollutant
are pollutants which form in the atmosphere.
smog
fog or haze combined with smoke and other atmospheric pollutants.
temperature inversion
a reversal of the normal behaviour of temperature in the troposphere
sick building syndrome
occupants complain of symptoms associated with acute discomfort, e.g., headache; eye, nose, or throat irritation; dry cough; dry or itchy skin; dizziness and nausea;
asbestos
a heat-resistant fibrous silicate mineral that can be woven into fabrics, and is used in fire-resistant and insulating materials such as brake linings.
decibel
a unit used to measure the intensity of a sound or the power level of an electrical signal by comparing it with a given level on a logarithmic scale.
acid precipitation
This can include rain, snow, fog, hail or even dust that is acidic.
acid shock
can cause significant damage to freshwater species and habitats.
pH
is a scale of acidity from 0 to 14.
