Chap-9 Flashcards
Heat is a __________
form energy
What is a measure of the degree of hotness or coldness of an object ?
Temperature
State 3 difference between Heat and Temperature.
- Heat is a form of energy , whereas temperature is the degree of hotness or coldness of an object
- Heat is measured in joule (J), whereas temperature is measured in degrees Celcius (°C) or kelvin (K)
3.The amount of heat depends on the type of material, quantity of material and temperature , whereas Temperature depends on the degree of movement of the particles in a matter.
Conduction is a part of the heat flow . What is Conduction ?
The process of heat transfer from hotter regions to colder regions through a solid medium
Convection is a part of the heat flow . What is Convection ?
Heat is transferred by the movement of fluid (liquid and gas) from hotter regions to colder regions
Radiation is a part of the heat flow . What is Radiation?
The process of transferring heat without any medium
Give examples of heat flow in natural phenomena. Support your answers.
- Sea breeze - The sea breeze circulation is composed of two opposing flows, one at the surface and one aloft . These two flows are a result of the difference in air density between the land and sea caused by the sun’s heating.
- Land Breeze-Land Breeze are formed during the night when sea water and land both lose heat, specific heat capacity of land being very low as compared to that of sea water, land loses heat energy fast and cools more rapidly as compared to the sea.
What is a Heat Conductor?
Materials that allow heat flow are known as heat conductors
Give an example of heat conducter.
Mercury in thermometers is a good heat conductor. It can detect change in temperature very quickly
What is a Heat Insulator ?
Materials that prevent heat flow are known as heat insulators
Give an example of heat insulator .
Oven gloves that are heat insulators can prevent our hands from getting scalded while taking food trays out from the oven
What is Thermal Equilibrium?
Objects are in thermal equilibrium, when there is no transfer of heat energy between the objects
Why do dark objects absorb and radiate heat better than white objects?
Because of Absorption and Radiation of Heat. The ability of an object to absorp or radiate heat depends on the type and colour of its surface.
Give an example of Heat Concept in Daily Life.
The Green Building Concept- is an idea developed to reduce the effects of rapid development on the environment and our health.
The Green Building Concept uses
1.has high energy efficiency
through the usage of solar
energy or renewable energy
2.has good water flow system, air
circulation and lighting
3.uses recycled materials
