Chap 8 Flashcards
1
Q
Facts about impulse
A
- The greater the time over which the collision occurs, the smaller the average force acting upon the object.
- To minimize the effect of the force on an object involved in a collision, the time must be increased.
- Whenever there’s a rebound, there’s a greater force.
2
Q
One collision scenario showcasing that momentum may not always be conserved
A
- Consider two colliding objects. If we consider individual objects, momentum will not be conserved. But if we take the whole system, say without any Fext, momentum will be conserved.
3
Q
Center of Mass facts
A
As if
- all of the system’s mass were concentrated there
- all external forces were applied there.
- The motion of the center of mass is solely determined by the external forces acting on the system.
- It can lie at a point where there is no mass (e.g: doughnut)
