Chap 8 Flashcards

Q

Facts about impulse

A
  • The greater the time over which the collision occurs, the smaller the average force acting upon the object.
  • To minimize the effect of the force on an object involved in a collision, the time must be increased.
  • Whenever there’s a rebound, there’s a greater force.

Q

One collision scenario showcasing that momentum may not always be conserved

A
  • Consider two colliding objects. If we consider individual objects, momentum will not be conserved. But if we take the whole system, say without any Fext, momentum will be conserved.

Q

Center of Mass facts

A

As if

  • all of the system’s mass were concentrated there
  • all external forces were applied there.
  • The motion of the center of mass is solely determined by the external forces acting on the system.
  • It can lie at a point where there is no mass (e.g: doughnut)
