Chap. 7 Vocabulary Flashcards
Measurement used to find lengths that are difficult to measure directly.
indirect measurement
A comparison of three (or more) numbers
extended ratio
Two polygons, if corresponding angles are congruent and if the lengths of corresponding sides are proportional.
similar polygons
If two angles of one triangle are congruent to two angles of another triangle, then the triangles are similar.
AA~
If a line is parallel to one side of a triangle and intersects the other two sides, then it divides those sides proportionally.
side-splitter theorem
If a ray bisects an angle of a triangle, then it divides the opposite sides into two segments that are proportional to the other two sides of the triangle.
triangle-angle-bisector theorem
If an angle of one triangle is congruent to an angle of a second triangle, and the sides that include the two angles are proportional, then the triangles are similar.
SAS~
An equation that states that two ratios are equal.
proportion
Ratio of corresponding linear measurements of two similar figures.
scale
If the corresponding sides of two triangles are proportional, then the triangles are similar.
SSS~
The middle two numbers in a proportion.
means
For any two positive numbers a and b, it is the positive number x, such that sqrt(ab).
geometric mean
The ratio that compares each length in the scale drawing to the actual length
scale factor
In a proportion, the product of the extremes equals the product of the means
cross products property
Figures that had the same shape but not necessarily the same size
similar figures
A comparison of two quantities by division
ratio
When three or more ratios are equal
extended proportion
All lengths are proportional to their corresponding actual lengths in this drawing
scale drawing
The first and last numbers in a proportion
extremes
